I have looked, but have not been able to find anything that goes into any detail. My grasp on this topic is not what I would consider proficient. Lastly, can you recommend any sources of information on creating and managing physical drives, volumes, partitions and file systems. In either case how would I go about creating and mounting so that they would be ready for use automatically upon booting? Should I just create 1 large volume and partition it for: Docs, DL's, Music, Photos, Movies? So, is this scheme making things more complicated than they should be? Formatted FAT32, Reasoning-it will be shared with other computers and devices. ID-6 (500GB Seagate), Create 1 partition (Photos). ID-5 (500GB Seagate), Create 1 partition (Music). ID-4 (500GB Hitachi), Create 1 partition (Movies). ID-3 (500GB Hitachi), Create 2 partitions, 1 for Documents, formatted ext4 and the other for Downloads also formatted ext4. Making it overkill to use the entire 80GB for the SWAP file. I have read that best practices for the SWAP is to have it located on a separate physical HDD than the OS and also that the file should be 2x the installed RAM, which is 8GB, so this would make the SWAP file 16GB. So the plan is to use the WD 320GB drive (ID-2) exclusively for the OS. At this point all I've done is install the OS on ID-2 (see "Drives" Below). Let me start by explaining how I have "planned" to do this and let me know if my plan is fee sable or or where changes should be made. Which is to build a media server/my go to computer. I have played around with it over the years, but nothing like what I'm trying to attempt now. First I want to thank you for any help and advice that you can provide me.
